Can You Wash Cashmere? How to Care for Cashmere Shawls and Knitwear

|Vshine Silk and Shine

Cashmere is one of the most luxurious natural fibres in the world — beautifully soft, warm, and light against the skin. With the right care, a cashmere shawl, wrap or knitwear piece can remain elegant and wearable for many years.

The good news is that cashmere can be washed at home. The key is to treat it gently: use cool or lukewarm water, a mild detergent, and avoid heat, twisting, or harsh agitation.

Can you wash cashmere at home?

Yes. Most cashmere can be washed at home, either by hand or on a gentle machine cycle, depending on the care label.

For cashmere shawls and wraps, we recommend hand washing where possible. It is the gentlest method and helps protect the softness, shape and finish of the fibres.

How to hand wash cashmere

  1. Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water. Never use hot water.
  2. Add a small amount of detergent designed for wool, cashmere or delicate fabrics.
  3. Submerge the cashmere and gently press the water through the fibres. Do not rub, scrub, wring or twist.
  4. Leave to soak for 10–20 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly in clean cool or lukewarm water until all detergent is removed.
  6. Gently press out excess water with your hands.
  7. Lay the cashmere flat on a clean dry towel, reshape carefully, and leave to air dry away from direct sunlight or direct heat.

Can you machine wash cashmere?

If the care label allows it, cashmere can sometimes be machine washed. Use a laundry bag, a wool or delicate cycle, cold water, and a low spin speed.

Remove the item promptly after washing and lay it flat to dry. Do not tumble dry unless the care label specifically says it is safe to do so.

For larger cashmere shawls and wraps, hand washing is usually the safer option.

Can cashmere get wet?

Yes — cashmere can get wet, but it needs to be handled carefully when damp. Wet cashmere fibres are more vulnerable to stretching and distortion. Never wring, twist or hang cashmere while wet. Always press out excess water gently and lay flat to dry.

Can cashmere be dry cleaned?

Yes. Dry cleaning is suitable for stubborn stains or structured cashmere garments. However, dry cleaning chemicals can be harsh on delicate natural fibres over time, so choose a reputable dry cleaner experienced with cashmere and fine wool.

For regular care, airing and gentle hand washing are usually enough.

Can cashmere be ironed?

Cashmere should not be ironed directly. If your cashmere shawl or knitwear needs refreshing, use a steamer on a low setting, holding it slightly away from the fabric. If you must use an iron, place a clean damp cloth between the iron and the cashmere, use the lowest heat setting, and press very gently — never drag.

How often should you wash cashmere?

Cashmere does not need to be washed after every wear. In many cases, airing it naturally between wears is enough.

Wash cashmere only when it is visibly soiled, marked, or no longer feels fresh. Overwashing can weaken the fibres and shorten the life of the garment.

How to store cashmere

Always fold cashmere rather than hanging it. Hanging can stretch the fibres and cause the piece to lose its shape.

Store cashmere in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Between seasons, use a breathable cotton storage bag or cedar-lined storage box to help protect against moths.

What to avoid when washing cashmere

  • Hot water
  • Fabric softener
  • Bleach
  • Wringing or twisting
  • Tumble drying on high heat
  • Drying on a radiator
  • Hanging while wet
  • Hanging for long-term storage
  • Ironing directly on the fabric
